Why Do So Many Men Suffer From Acid Reflux?

If you’re a man who suffers from acid reflux, it might seem as if you know lots of men who do and you might be wondering why this would be the case. You might like to know that if you find out what causes this condition in men more than women; you can work toward treating your heartburn and becoming free from it for life. This can mean freedom to do what you want when you want, without the painful burning that can often seem as if it’s walking right next to you. You should also know that if you just deal with your condition and don’t work to treat it, you could be causing permanent damage to your body that can have long term negative effects.

The Reason So Many Men Have Acid Reflux

Now, it might seem strange, but you might be interested to find that the key important element as to why so many men suffer from this condition is that they tend to eat more than their female counterparts. It seems that men are able to pack more away than women and this causes them to do just that. The thing is that, even though many men have faster metabolisms than women, their stomachs really aren’t that much larger, so by eating more food, they are causing their stomach to make more acid in an effort to digest the extra food.

You should know that this isn’t the only reason. In fact, many men drink more alcohol and smoke more than women as well and this too can have an effect on the occurrence of acid reflux. Since men are typically slightly larger than women, it seems that they consume more of nearly everything than women do and this might have an effect on their condition.

Another reason why many men suffer from acid reflux might have to do with their line of work. Lots of men work in industries that expose them to chemicals and toxins in the air that most women don’t breathe. These chemicals serve to weaken the esophageal sphincter, and that can allow acid to climb into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

The good news is that many men who suffer from this condition find that by simply losing some weight, watching what they eat and working to ensure that they use the necessary safety equipment when working with chemicals, they can effectively reduce their acid reflux symptoms and even gain some serious relief.

It’s a good idea to quit smoking if you do, cut back on the fatty greasy foods, reduce the amount of alcohol you drink and try sleeping on your left side to encourage easier digestion. You should also know that if you do suffer from the occasional bout of heartburn, you can take over the counter acid reducers which will help to ease your pain and let you get through your day or night, but you shouldn’t take these for more than two weeks at a time.

If you think that you are suffering from acid reflux, you need to work to ease your symptoms and reduce the frequency of it’s occurrence as soon as you can so that you can avoid any potential long term side effects and get back to living pain free again. You don’t have to live with your acid reflux, but you do have to work to treat it if you have it.
