What Is Acid Reflux or GERD?
It seems as if many people suffer from acid reflux these days, but do you really know what it is? You might know that this condition has to do with heartburn, in fact heartburn is the number one symptom of acid reflux, but did you know that acid reflux is the cause of your heartburn?
You might not know that there are other, more serious problems which might be causing your heartburn symptoms such as acid reflux disease or GERD (Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease) and these conditions should be treated. So What Is GERD?
GERD is a condition where liquids in the stomach actually back up into the esophagus. The liquid in the stomach contains pepsin and acid and bile, so when you suffer from this condition, these three liquids can mix to cause you with a very painful problem.

What Is Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux is what happens every time you get heartburn. Unlike its more serious cousin, GERD, acid reflux might be occasional or chronic. When you suffer from this condition, the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus isn’t able to properly close and create a tight seal to prevent the acid in your stomach from rising into the esophagus.

You can go a long way in easing your acid reflux symptoms by making sure to remain upright after eating for at least 30 minutes before lying down. You should also avoid strenuous activities while you are waiting for your food to digest so no long walks or work outs until at least an hour after you’ve eaten. Also, consider choosing to eat smaller meals more frequently throughout your day and work to reduce how much you smoke, or drink coffee or alcohol.
It’s important to know that although acid reflux can be a painful and frustrating condition, you can take many steps to overcome this condition on your own. When you make the right decisions and educate yourself about your acid reflux problem, your symptoms will finally end.
