Common Heartburn Cure Medication Treatments

There are many people out there who suffer greatly from pyrosis, which is another way of saying heartburn. This burning and fiery feeling that engulfs the esophagus is all caused by the acid in the stomach flowing up into the esophagus of the person with the condition. You will often hear the term ‘cardiac’ assigned to the condition, however heartburn truly has nothing to do with the heart. It can start as a burn in the esophagus and slowly travels into the chest and throat. It can also be felt in the neck and jaw. It is actually the cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is abbreviated as GERD.

How To Cure Heartburn

There are four categories a heartburn cure can be put into. They include the intake of medicine, natural or herbal remedies, lifestyle changes, and finally surgery. This article will dive into the heartburn medications that can help you.

Effective Therapeutic Medications

There are several common medications for heartburn. They are proton pump substances, h2 blockers, bismuth salicylate, and antacids and baking soda cures.

H2 blockers: This kind of medication works to dispel histamines and their affect on the stomach. This will decrease the production of stomach acid. These drugs also go by the names H2 receptor antagonists and H2RA.

One noted disadvantage to relying on these as a heartburn cure is that they only work once they are absorbed into the bloodstream. This can take up to a half an hour after they are taken by mouth. While not quick, they are highly effective as a heartburn cure.

Antacids: These common medicines are able to provide the quickest form of relief from heartburn. Once they are ingested, they stop stomach acid and bring instant relief. There are several common components that make antacids work against acid buildup. They are primarily made up of aluminum, magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, magaldrate, hydrotalcite and sodium bicarbonate.

Bismouth subsalicylate: These are excellent for digestive issues such as diarrhea and nausea, and vomiting. These medications are fundamental to the bowel fluids and act as an anti-bacterial agent.

PPIS: This particular medication actually halts the production of stomach acid. These come from benzimidazole and imidazopiridine and are very popular as a heartburn cure.

Side Effects of Heartburn Cure Medications

Some of the side effects from heartburn medications can include nausea, constipation, diarrhea, headaches and dark colored stool.

If you are afflicted with phenylketonuria they should not use any antacids with phenylalanine. Also if a child has chicken pox or the flu, they should not take bismuth subsalicylate as it can lead to Reye’s syndrome. You should also avoid these if you are allergic to salicylates or aspirin.

You need to investigate any side effects from a heartburn cure before taking it. Always seek the advice of your doctor before you start taking medication like antacids.
