Acid Reflux Remedies To Help Get Better Sleep

Acid Reflux Remedies To Sleep Through The Night

Guest Author

For the last 10 years of his life, my father had a severe problem with acid reflux, and often found it difficult to sleep through the night. It took us some time and a lot of research, but we finally found some acid reflux remedies that were not extraordinarily expensive and allowed my father to do something that most of us take for granted — to get a good night’s sleep!

The first thing that we found was that the time he last ate was a big indicator as to whether or not he would have a problem with acid reflux throughout the night. If he ate no later than 5 p.m., he did not have a problem at all. He could eat whatever he wanted, as a matter of fact, and of all of the acid reflux remedies, this was the one he most often employed. He liked to be able to eat whatever he liked for dinner and he learned to suck on hard candy or chew gum if he got hungry after dinner.

Another of the acid reflux remedies that we discovered was the wedge pillow, which essentially is a triangular pillow that allowed him to sleep in an elevated position. He was probably at about a 40 degree angle, and because his esophagus and mouth were both higher than his stomach, acid reflux issues were not a problem for him. He would usually employ this particular acid reflux remedy when he knew he was going to have to eat late, such as on holidays and family outings.

One of the acid reflux remedies I remember working the best for my father was when my mother found a diet that prevented him from building up a lot of stomach acid and pretty much nixed acid reflux entirely. It was extremely bland and certainly not one that I would recommend for anyone without the condition, but it worked for him, and eventually, that was the one that he stuck with. I remember asking him one time if he ever missed some of his favorite foods, because my father always liked spicy things, and he said he did, but that the trade-off was not worth it.

Acid reflux remedies can be a big help. I have to say that I have been very fortunate in my life to never suffer from the condition, but in watching my father’s problem with the disease and hearing other accounts from other people, I can only imagine it is very difficult to try to endure on a daily basis.

I would just like to say thank you for this contribution.

Acid Reflux Remedy For Finding Relief

Acid Reflux Remedies For Short and Long Term Relief

Are you looking for an acid reflux remedy for long term effects? If so, then your best chance is to choose natural acid reflux remedies, instead of the easily accessible treatments of over-the-counter medications. It’s true, OTC antacids are very convenient to use and are easily accessible, but most natural treatments are far safer and usually more effective than conventional medications.

Before you start searching for an effective acid reflux cure, you should understand what goes on in your body whenever you experience acid reflux. Officially known as gastroesophageal reflux, acid reflux is also sometimes referred to as heartburn. It is manifested by an intense burning sensation in the stomach, which is the result of stomach acids rising up into the esophageal tube.

  • Sometimes, the pain reaches all the way up into the chest area and feels like a heart attack, which is why acid reflux also became known as heartburn.

Do You Know The Causes of Your Discomfort?

There are many possible causes of acid reflux and in order to find the best acid reflux remedy, you would first need to figure out what the cause of your particular case is.

  • For example, some heartburn cases are due to the excessive consumption of spicy or acidic foods. Obviously, the best acid reflux remedy for these cases is simply to avoid the culprit foods.
  • Another example is when your acid reflux is caused by an improper sleeping position. Lying flat on your back without a pillow under your head can definitely cause your stomach acids to escape into the esophagus. To prevent this, you should put a moderately high pillow under your head when you sleep.

Common Acid Reflux Remedy Options

  1. As just mentioned, avoid eating the foods that give you those painful acid reflux symptoms and look at the way you sleep.
  2. Another commonly recommended acid reflux remedy is to chew some gum after your meals. This will encourage the flow of saliva, which is needed to keep your esophagus clear and to prevent the stomach acids from flowing back into the esophageal tube.
  3. You can also eat an apple, drink a big glass of water, or add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to your glass of water.
  • Don’t drink milk. This will not neutralize the acid like the apple cider vinegar will. I know it is a remedy people use constantly, but it is nowhere near as effective as a glass of water.
  • Quitting the habits of smoking and excessive alcohol drinking is also encouraged. No matter how many heartburn remedies you follow, the problem will never completely go away unless you stop smoking and keep alcohol consumption in moderation.

Finally, you might have to make some changes to your eating habits as well. This is perhaps the easiest yet most effective acid reflux treatment. Reduce the portions of your meals and eat more frequently throughout the day. Chew your food well, never overeat and avoid lying down right after a meal. By doing these simple precautions, you can already reduce your risks for acid reflux by a huge margin.
