Baby Heartburn Is Common
It can be hard to deal with baby heartburn because they are so small and they are not able to rely on the regular treatments that adults can. Parents should know that heartburn in babies or infant reflux is quite common and so there is no reason to worry and it is usually pretty easy to find treatment. A baby’s stomach is very sensitive and can react badly to the seemingly simplest things.
Parents need to remember that it can be hard to even learn that your infant has baby heartburn in the first place. It is important to watch for the symptoms and these are typically the same as those in an adult. Regurgitation is a visible sign and a burning sensation in the chest may show as a sign of discomfort. These are the two most commonly experienced symptoms. It is very easy to misdiagnose a condition like baby heartburn because the symptoms are related to other conditions as well.
Recognizing Baby Heartburn
Parents will usually be able to recognize baby heartburn because they will see that their baby is distressed. When they take the child in to the doctor they will most likely use process of elimination in order to help them determine what it is that is wrong. Baby heartburn and acid reflux are so common this is probably one of the first things that the doctor will suspect is the issue here. Parents can at least find relief in knowing that this is usually not a serious situation and that there are things they can do to help with the baby heartburn.
The doctor will make a diagnosis and will then begin offering ideas to the parent of what they can do to help. It is more important than anything to be safe when dealing with baby heartburn. The most major thing that a doctor will tell any parent to do is make some lifestyle changes for their little one. This includes changing around the feeding times for one so that baby is not eating so close to bedtime.
They should also try to keep the child’s head elevated when they are going to sleep at night. Some children are lactose intolerant and this could be what is causing their baby heartburn if they are on cow’s milk already. Smoking around your baby can also cause heartburn as well as a number of other health problems and so of course this should be avoided.
